Review: Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai

Inside Out & Back AgainInside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When I cracked open Inside Out & Back Again, I was completely surprised to find that it's written entirely in poetic form. I'd never read this kind of novel, and at first I was uncertain about it. But as I let my eyes take in the verses, the gorgeous language and imagery swept me away to Vietnam.

I have never read words like Ms. Lai's--concise, eloquent, delectable, heart-wrenching. Every word packs a punch; every entry in Ha's diary is a journey and a lesson. I re-read many pages, not for lack of comprehension, but for sheer pleasure and appreciation for such masterful writing.

The beautiful language conveys an equally compelling story: Ha's journey from Vietnam to Alabama at the close of the Vietnam War. I know little of the history of this era, but reading this little girl's hopes, dreams, desires, and fears taught me so much about such a journey, and how it forms a person.
