Review: Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

Darkness never dies.

Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land. She finds starting new is not easy while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. She can’t outrun her past or her destiny for long.

Hype is a tough thing to live up to.

Popularity, too.

Not to mention the Sophomore Jinx, the “Second Book Syndrome”…I think you get my point. But no matter the expectations I had placed on Siege and Storm after reading Shadow and Bone, Leigh Bardugo managed to surpass them with ease.

(BTW It’s was really hard to write a spoiler-free review of Siege and Storm.)

In Siege and Storm, Leigh Bardugo wove a classic battle for power throughout. But what makes it unique is that Leigh kept me flip flopping on who I wanted to have the power, and who I would trust it with. Would I choose family, the Grisha, or Alina? Or maybe The Darkling? Leigh doesn't make it a simple decision. But that isn't where Leigh stopped torturing me. The arrogance of a new character, unity, and fear forced me to constantly re-consider what’s more important…Love, duty, or fate?

Another thing that blew me away with Siege and Storm, and Shadow and Bone, was Leigh’s choice of detail. Leigh flew me through a world filled with words only she could create, and only Leigh could make me believe were true. I never felt overloaded with fantastical details, and that allowed me to run alongside Alina as the weight on her shoulders got heavier and darker.

Surrounded with new characters, ferocious beasts, mind-blowing secrets, I’m still asking myself…Where does my allegiance lie?

Now, as a treat to the readers at Kidliterati, we have a signed copy of Siege and Storm up for grabs. I had Leigh sign it while she was in Toronto visiting with her Fierce Reads tour. Good luck!

  1. YA is my favorite genre. I often call it "the golden age" of my reading. It's what really captured my imagination and gave me the drive to try writing on my own. I hope one day to create a book that inspires another young woman to tell her own stories.

  4. The book was AMAZING! The Darkling, even though he was the bad guy, had me swooning every time he was in the scene. It's not always easy to make the villain swoon worthy.
