Review: The 13th Sign by Kristin O'Donnell Tubb

The 13th SignThe 13th Sign by Kristin O'Donnell Tubb
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As a kid, I was fascinated by the zodiac. Reading The 13th Sign reminded me of why the zodiac is so interesting - that the sign under which you were born can set your personality. But what if all that changed? Instead of being an Aries (like me!), you're now a Pisces. Or like Jalen in The 13th Sign, you're no longer a Sagittarius, but an entirely new sign - Ophiuchus.

After accidentally unlocking Ophiuchus and changing the personalities of everyone in the world, including herself, Jalen and her friends must fight the other twelve signs in order to find Ophiuchus, or the changes will be permanent.

I absolutely loved the concept of this book, and Tubb did such a great job of weaving the action of Jalen's quest into the troubles of Jalen's life. I found myself blinking back tears at a couple of moments while reading. The end is especially satisfying because of Jalen's growth and because of how the layered plots resolve (which I didn't guess at all!). Another huge bonus to this book is the New Orleans setting and the way it's used to enhance the story.
