Review: GALACTIC HOT DOGS: COSMOE'S WEINER GETAWAY by Max Brallier and Rachel Maguire

Galactic Hot Dogs: Cosmoe's Wiener GetawayGalactic Hot Dogs: Cosmoe's Wiener Getaway by Max Brallier

What the butt? A Galactic Hot Dogs book?

Sure enough, there stacked in my bag of BEA books, was a print version of the Funbrain.com online serial. If your kids spend time on Funbrain, or its sister-site, Poptropica, then they've probably already seen Cosmoe and his alien buddy Humphree and his multi-purpose wrist-blob Goober, but for the uninitiated, this fast-paced, frenetically-illustrated compendium may be just the ticket.

The book is turned up to eleven. It has everything you've ever thought of, and a lot of things you haven't. There's mutant worm wrestling, space pirate zombies, evil queens, spunky evil princesses, quick-witted escapes, and The Ultimate Evil. And despite being called Galactic Hot Dogs: Cosmoe's Weiner Getaway, the pages are delightfully free of rude jokes and poorly-veiled double entendres. Each short chapter ends in a cliff-hanger, which is to be expected from a serial, but the pacing (mostly) keeps that pattern from becoming monotonous.

Is it for you? I don't know. My 15-year-old daughter looked at me reading it and said, "Really, Dad?" But the 10-year-old boy inside me just said, "Look out galaxy, here I come!"
